Teaching is a Legitimate and Demanding Professions
As I wind up the school year and reflect on all that has happened this year, I have been thinking about what it means to be a teacher. In our society today, teachers are too often thought of as having one singular function, when in reality, teachers wear many different hats.
This feat is neither easy nor trivial. Teachers — just like other professions that often require an advanced degree — need to be appreciated for it each and every day, not just during a designated week each year.
As a teacher, I am also a coach, manager, mathematician, mentor, and public relations person. I communicate with many people each day about math, student progress, teaching pedagogy, life and learning goals, how to handle stress and new situations, how to take care of yourself, early middle colleges, and post-secondary education. My point is, teaching is not just standing in front of a group of people and telling them things. Teaching is as multifaceted and demanding as any other profession. Continue reading.
